A man has been charged after a woman in her 70s was knocked to the ground and robbed in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, leaving the woman needing hospital treatment.

The 29-year-old from Hockley was arrested shortly after the woman was attacked at the junction of Warstone Lane and Vyse Lane yesterday morning (29 April).

Members of the public helped detain the suspect before officers arrived on the scene.

The woman is still in hospital receiving treatment for a suspected fractured hip.

West Midlands Police said: "Tackling robbery is important us and we launched Operation Ruby as part of our drive to catch suspects and reduce offences.

We continue to have visible patrols in and around the Jewellery Quarter and across the wider city centre."
