Leamington man jailed for punching and racially abuse police officers
Liam Bentley, 29, had been drinking at a community centre in Chesterton Drive, Leamington on Thursday (15 April) evening when he started to become aggressive and pushing over tables and smashing glasses.
A man who punched an off duty police officer and racially abused two other officers has been jailed.
A woman at the community centre identified herself as an off duty police officer at which point Bentley punched her in the face.
Bentley eventually left and started to become racially abusive in the street.
He was arrested a short time later at his home.
While in custody Bentley caused extensive damage to his cell and racially abused two police officers.
Now Bentley has been sent to prison for 14 weeks after pleading guilty to assaulting an emergency worker, three counts of causing racially aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress, and criminal damage.
Bentley of Ford House, Leamington was also found to have breached a suspended prison sentence order from July last year when he was convicted of possession of an offensive weapon.
Deputy Chief Constable Debbie Tedds said: “We will not tolerate violence or abuse against officers who are carrying out their lawful duties. This is yet another incident that demonstrates the risk police officers face every day.”
