Calls for more support to help footballers with mental health
The Kaleidoscope Plus Group want more to be done at grassroots level
A West Brom charity is calling for more to be done in football - to help all players with their mental health.
Recent stats show the amount of players who're part of the PFA union seeking counselling quadrupled last year, compared to 2016.
The Kaleidoscope Plus Group also want extra support for those who don't make it to the professional game.
Less than 1% who try actually do.
Kaleidoscope are the main shirt sponsors for Kidderminster Harriers - and they work with players at the club to support them with their mental health.
Monica Shafaq, who's is CEO of the charity, plus a non-executive Director at the club says;
“Football is ruthless. So many kids devote their time & energy hoping to be the next big thing.
Less than 1% make it.
The feeling of loss is like being bereaved. Clubs and academies must do more to prepare kids & professionals for life after football. Their mental health matters too.”
Proper educational and emotional support pathways need to be provided within football, so players, no matter what age or level, have the tools to deal with the emotional distress of being released, whilst also having the skills to do something else.”
Neil Male, CEO at Kidderminster Harriers FC adds;
“Mental health has a huge stigma within football, but our partnership with The Kaleidoscope Plus group has enabled us to work with players from the grassroots up to our first team, to educate and support them during their time with us and beyond.”
