Brianna Ghey: hundreds turn out at vigil in Birmingham
A candlelit vigil was held near Birmingham Hippodrome.
Hundreds of people gathered outside the Hippodrome Theatre in Birmingham last night (Friday) for a candlelit vigil in memory of Brianna Ghey.
The 16-year-old transgender girl was stabbed to death last weekend in a park in Warrington, Cheshire.
A 15-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy have been charged with her murder.
In Birmingham, candles were lit, flowers were laid and speeches were made as crowds gathered to pay their respects to the teenager. A moment of silence was also observed.
Vigils have been taking place around the country this week, with organisers calling for more protection for the trans community.
Eva Echo, is a trans activist and part of Birmingham Pride and spoke at last night's vigil: "The news of what happened to Brianna has hit everyone really hard and sent shockwaves through the community.
"It is such a shame we are gathering under such circumstances, but it's immensely powerful and emotional.
"It's a moment to come together to remember Brianna and remember trans lives."
A gofundme has been set up to raise money for the 16-year-old's family and to help with funeral costs.
It's so far raised over £105,000.
