Birmingham 'fairy godmother' helping disadvantaged schoolchildren go to prom
Stefanie Lakin started Madrina over a year ago after she helped a student struggling get a prom dress.
A woman from Birmingham is acting as 'fairy godmother' for hundreds of students who can't afford prom dresses or suits.
Stefanie Lakin operates Madrina, a prom bank filled with hundreds of donated gowns, ties, shirts, trousers and shoes.
All items are donations from the public, businesses and companies.
Well it all began over a year ago when Stefanie helped a student at her school get a prom dress after she said she wasn't attending because her family couldn't afford one.
Since then, Madrina has grown with hundreds of dresses in any colour and style for people to still be able to attend their prom.
So far, over 200 people have benefitted from the prom bank and Stefanie said: "We've had lots of kind donations from people and it's so helpful.
"It's an absolute massive expense is prom, having something like this helps make it inclusive and doing this helps to make it accessible for people.
"I would hate for someone to miss out on their prom because they couldn't afford a dress.
"When they come here, they are really overwhelmed. One parent this morning said to her daughter that this is the first time they've seen her smile in a long time.
"That was really heart-warming."
Madrina plan to be doing more pop-up shops to make sure no one misses out on their prom and that it's for all.
