The Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2024 has announced that Opheem, located in heart of Birmingham, has been awarded two Michelin Stars.

Chef patron, Aktar Islam, has made history with the win, making Opheem Birmingham’s first ever two-star restaurant, and the only two-star Indian restaurant outside of London.

The prestigious culinary guide writes of Opheem:

“Locally born and bred chef-owner Aktar Islam has fashioned a wonderful dining experience at this ever-developing restaurant.

"A spacious bar and sitting room are cleverly used as a space in which to enjoy snacks and a drink before heading to the dining room and its open kitchen.

"The series of flavoursome, excellently spiced and carefully balanced dishes are creative, modern takes on Indian recipes. Well-chosen wines from the excellent sommelier are on-hand to accompany.”

On winning two stars, Aktar has commented:

It’s incredible to achieve. My journey started 31 years ago when I was kicked out of school.

"It just goes to show what this industry can give someone with no prospects. Here I am. Anyone who says this industry has no future or has no opportunities, I’m proof that it’s not true.

"From walking through the doors to leaving at the end of the night, every single member of our team plays a pivotal role and I am grateful for their hard work being recognised by the Guide.”

Specialising in progressive Indian cuisine, Opheem serves highly original dishes that keep Indian cooking at their core but have a modern slant.

Aktar’s creations demonstrate sophistication and depth of flavour, inspired by his Bangladeshi heritage to create a personal, story-led menu dictated by the British seasons.
