Birmingham man jailed after blinding girlfriend in jealous rage
Rhys Buchanan attacked his girlfriend, leaving her blind in one eye.
A Birmingham man has been jailed after punching his girlfriend so violently, he left her blind in one of her eyes.
Rhys Buchanan, 23, worked himself into a fit of jealousy when he accused her of cheating. The single punch in May 2022 left the victim in hospital for several days, where surgeons were unable to save her sight.
Buchanan, from Pershore Road, Selly Oak, admitted causing grievous bodily harm on 7 November last year and was sentenced to three years and three months on Wednesday (14 Feb) at Birmingham Crown Court.
Investigating officer Kathryn Burns said: “Violence against women in a domestic situation is a devastating crime that can have a profound impact on victims and their families.
“This young woman has been left with a life changing injury which has affected her, not only physically, but psychologically and emotionally.
"We are committed to tackling domestic violence head-on to create a safer society for all women and girls.
“We work with several partner agencies and charities who can offer support to women who find themselves in an abusive situation and we would urge them to seek help if they feel able to.”
