A man from Birmingham has been charged with fire offences after a teenage boy was seriously injured in the midst of a police chase.

West Midlands Police announced that a 28-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause violence.

The incident took place when a Nissan Micra failed to stop for officers during a routine check in Balsall Heath on Friday afternoon (May 17th).

A police vehicle gave chase to the car, which went on to clip another car on Edward Road, at the junction of Lincoln Street at around 12:50 p.m.

Now after charging him, police have named the man as Hakeem Ebrahim, of no fixed abode. As well as being charged with the possession of a firearm, he was also charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of ammunition without a certificate.

Officers said that following his charges, Ebrahim will appear before Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Monday (May 20th).

During the police chase, a teenage boy who was in the assailant's Nissan Micra, sustained serious injuries.

He currently remains in hospital receiving treatment for his wounds, and has been described as being in a stable condition. The teenager has also been arrested for the possession of a firearm.

Investigations are still ongoing as officers look to trace a third man who made off with the vehicle itself following the incident.

The car was eventually recovered and is now being forensically examined by the force, as CCTV camera feeds are being viewed by investigators.

In the meantime, the force has appealed to anyone who may have any potential information to come forward as soon as possible, by calling 101 and quoting incident reference number 1869 from May 17th.
