Today (16 January) is widely considered as 'Blue Monday,' the most depressing day of the year. It usually takes place on the third Monday of January and claims the title due to a combination of post Christmas Blues and long dark evenings.

But this Blue Monday, 'sunlight-inspired light emitting billboards' are being put up around the city to help boost people's mood.

Inspired by Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D) lamps, the glowing digital billboards are emitting light to a level that can help boost serotonin.

The billboards will be at Corporation Street, High Street, Ladywell Walk, New Street and Smallbrook Queensway in Birmingham from 4-8pm.

Nathan Crawford, Executive Design Director at Saatchi & Saatchi, who have created the billboards said: " We wanted to remind our commuters that short days can really affect your mood and ultimately your immune system. So we're inviting them to stand in front of the billboards to boost their serotonin.

"Winter is the time when our intake of vitamin D will suffer, so what a better way to lift people's spirit on the bluest day of the year then by giving them a little bit of sunlight."

Billboards will also pop up in commuter hotspots in London and Manchester.
