Technology giant Amazon is to shut a site in the West Midlands when it opens a huge new warehouse.

Up to 1,000 members of staff will be affected by the closure of the fulfilment centre in Rugeley, Staffordshire.

All of them will be offered roles at the new "state-of-the-art" warehouse in Sutton Coldfield, less than 20 miles away, which will create 400 additional new jobs for the region in 2023.

Amazon said the centre, which will open in early October, will have 2,000 employees within three years.

Recruitment has started for engineers, HR and IT professionals, health and safety and finance specialists, and operations managers, as well as people who pick, pack and ship customer orders.

Neil Travis, the firm's regional director, said: "The West Midlands is an important region for Amazon and I am delighted to confirm our commitment with this ÂŁ500 million investment in a new state-of-the-art fulfilment centre in Sutton Coldfield.

"The new site will create 400 new jobs for this year, taking our total workforce in the West Midlands to more than 4,000 full and part-time roles, and our investment in the region to more than ÂŁ3.2 billion since 2010."

The company employs roughly 1.5 million people worldwide and more than 50,000 in the UK.
