WOW Theatre’s award-winning group are performing a West End version of Oliver for the next four nights at Weymouth Pavilion.
The story is set in the streets of Victorian England and follows the life of a hungry orphan, Oliver, as he becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker.
For over 40 years, WOW has entertained audiences, even winning ‘Best Youth Production’ in the southwest.
Ben Cecil, who is playing Fagin in the production, told us: “The production has come along so well over the last couple of months. The band is incredible, the set and costumes are amazing and it’s just all come together.
Rehearsals for this musical adaptation of Oliver, popularised by the West End production in 2009, began in September.
Cast members have told us they are “thrilled” to get on stage, although some nerves are naturally kicking in, “They are such well-known characters, I'm a little bit nervous but for the most part, I’m excited,” said Amelia Ryan, who plays Nancy,
Ben added: “I wouldn't have as much confidence as I do now if I didn't take part in musical theatre because it teaches you how to get over your nerves.”
WOW is a registered charity and all proceeds from ticket sales support its work with young people in the Weymouth area.
Amelia told us why she joined WOW: “I've always been passionate about musical theatre and I can't imagine myself doing something in the future that doesn’t involve the performing arts.
“It's given me some of my best friends, experiences that I’ll never forget and ultimately inspired me to know that this is what I want to do going forward.”
Ben noted: “It has that element of professionalism when you're in rehearsals, but it’s also feels like a family because everyone gets on so well.”
Tickets start at £17 for over 60s or under 16s and standard pricing is £20 for an adult. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to supporting young people in the Weymouth area.
