A number of people had to be evacuated in Weymouth yesterday afternoon (17 June).

Emergency services were rushed to the Esplanade, with reports of a suspected gas leak at the Marks and Spencer store.

A cordon was put in place.

In a statement, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue told us: "We were called at 4:26pm today with reports of a gas incident at a commercial property in St Marys Street, Weymouth.

"Crews from Weymouth and Dorchester were mobilised to the scene and on arrival carried a full inspection of the building and discovered a refrigeration unit was leaking CO2 which resulted in the evacuation of the building for safety.

"Firefighters isolated a gas supply and requested the attendance of an engineer to attend.

"The stop was in at 6:15pm and the incident was handed over to the responsible persons.  No casualties were reported."
