A man in his 80s has suffered serious injuries after he was hit by material falling off a lorry in Christchurch.

It happened just before midday today (Wednesday 10 May 2023) as he walked on the A35 Barrack Road near to the Shell petrol station.

His next of kin has been informed.

It's reported the fallen item was a metal cage containing boxed goods.

Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing and road closures have been put in place as an examination of the scene is conducted.

Police Constable Tracey Downer, of the traffic unit, said: “We are carrying out a number of enquiries to establish the full circumstances of this incident.

“I am keen to speak to anyone who saw what happened, or drivers who were in the area and may have captured anything relevant on dashcam footage.

“Finally, I would like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding during the closures.”
