Dorset people asked to be water cautious this summer
33 people have been rescued from water by DWFRS in the last year
Dorset's Fire and Rescue Service is urging us to avoid temptation this summer and stay out of the county's bodies of water.
In the last year, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) has rescued 33 people from water related incidents in the last year.
David Geddes is a station manager with the service, and says the water hides many dangers.
He said: "Whilst it may look nice and calm on the surface, underneath you could have. varying temperatures and currents.
"You could have items underneath the water there that could trap your feet, body or clothing and then hold you actually hold you under the water."
He's urging us not to venture into the water, especially after a drink as people are enjoying the better weather that comes with summer.
The warmer weather also brings with it more calls to the service.
"Unfortunately, from a fire service perspective, we get called out quite a lot to people in water, especially this time of year, where they've used small inflatables or lie lows and stuff like that to go and play on the river," said David.
People get into difficulty as they're carried downstream and become trapped in branches or swept down to various locations.
He warned that because of the rural nature of much of the county, it can take a long time for rescue to arrive at a location - and even that can be tricky.
He told GHR that one of their biggest hurdles is people not knowing where they are and the time it takes to find people can create further risk.
David added that rescue operations are 'challenging' and 'complex' jobs, saying they'd rather we are enjoying ourselves and not placing ourselves at risk in the water.
