Nearly 100 dogs rescued from one home by Dorset charity
The dogs were kept in incredibly poor conditions that 'shocked and horrified' staff
A total of 96 dogs have been rescued from a single home by a Dorset-based animal rescue charity.
Margaret Green Animal Rescue was called to a property in Devon reported to contain lots of dogs kept in poor conditions.
Staff say what they found upon arrival left them 'shocked and horrified'.
The dogs were being kept in disgusting conditions, many of them had never left the house - not even to use the toilet.
Many animals had fur so matted that they could not walk, urinate or defecate.
One dog had a ruptured eye ulcer which resulted in her eye needing to be removed.
25 dogs were transported back to the charity's Devon and Dorset rehoming centres. Treating their medical issues has been estimated at a cost in excess of £15,000.
Niki Ging, Manager of Margaret Green Animal Rescue Rehoming Centre said:
"This is a dreadful situation for these adorable little dogs. The road to their physical and emotional recovery will be long, but our dedicated staff and volunteers are relieved we're able to provide the first acts of care and comfort that these innocent animals will have known."
The home was already at full capacity before it stepped in to provide for these dogs. The number of dogs they've taken in from this situation is equivalent to the total number of spaces the charity has for homeless dogs at one of it's centres.
The charity has issued an urgent appeal for donations to help them manage the huge task or caring for and ultimately rehoming the animals.
