Dorchester's Fairfield Road to undergo New Year works
Dorset Council wants to make the route safer for pedestrians
A popular route into Dorchester town centre will undergo works in the New Year, to make it better for pedestrians.
Fairfield Road is heavily used by people on foot, but there's no official pathways, while parked cars and two-way traffic can pose extra safety risks.
Dorset Council's starting work on January 8th to make improvements between Weymouth Avenue and Maumbury Road.
The changes will include:
- Creating a wide footway along the length of Fairfield Road
- Providing safer crossing points across Fairfield Road at junctions
- Installing a new access into the car park directly from the railway station (from Copper Street)
- Providing better street lighting on Fairfield Road
- Creating a pedestrianised space at the busy eastern end by restricting vehicle access
That's all aimed at helping pedestrians looking to access Brewery Square, and to get between Dorchester West and Dorchester South train stations.
It's expected all the work will be completed by February 16th.
Signs will be put up to notify drivers.
All businesses and the Dorchester markets will be open as usual, but people may need to access these, using a different route which will be marked.
