Plans to redevelop Manchester United's iconic Old Trafford stadium have been given the green light by Trafford Council.

The major step forward could pave the way for work to begin on a new 100,000 capacity stadium.

It comes after United were given a boost by Government officials backing their proposals to regenerate the area.

The leader of Trafford Council said the project would be "transformational" and they are now looking for a "top class" consultation team.

It is believed the plans could add more than £7 billion to the local economy, provide 90,000 jobs and 15,000 homes.

Cllr Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s Executive member for Economy and Regeneration, said: “This is a hugely exciting project and working with our partners and private developers, we will be looking to create thousands of new homes, new neighbourhoods and help create a world-class setting for the Manchester United stadium.

"I am delighted that the Trafford Wharfside area is the focus of this important future planning project."
