Police investigating an attack on officers outside a station in Rhondda Cynon Taf have said the motive is currently "unclear".

South Wales Police confirmed that a 27-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of assault, arson and criminal damage following the incident at Talbot Green Police Station.

Initially, two people were believed to have been injured in the attack, which was described as a "violent struggle" with a man.

However, in a new update, police have confirmed that a third officer was injured in the incident.

In the statement, the force said they are continuing to work out the reasoning for the attack, but confirmed that there was no wider threat to the public.

Following the attack, two of the officers attacked were taken to hospital to be treated for their injuries, but have since been discharged. None of the officers suffered major injuries in the incident.

The suspect, who is a man from the Llantrisant area of Rhondda Cynon Taf currently remains in police custody.

Speaking on the case, Chief Superintendent Stephen Jones from South Wales thanked the local community for their support in helping with the case.

"Our officers showed great bravery and quick thinking during the altercation and despite being understandably shaken I am very glad to report that none of the officers involved sustained any major injuries," he said.

"We are at the early stages of our investigations and currently the motive for this attack is unclear.

"We are working to understand the full circumstances, but we believe this to be a localised targeted attack that was focused towards police.

"I appreciate that this will have caused understandable shock and concern in the local community. However, I would like to make it clear that there is nothing to suggest that there is any wider threat to the public.

As well as this, Welsh Labour MP Alex Davies-Jones, who serves Pontypridd where the incident took place, added that people should remain cautious and aware for the potential of misinformation.
