A man has been charged with attempted murder and a host of other offences following a violent struggle outside a police station in South Wales.

South Wales Police were alerted to an incident taking place at Talbot Green Police Station just before 7pm on Friday night (January 31st).

In the incident, it is believed that a man had gone onto the premises of the station, where he started damaging police vehicles.

When officers stationed in the building saw what was going on, three officers challenged the man on what he was doing, resulting in a "violent struggle".

As a result of the altercation, two of the officers were taken to hospital to receive treatment for their injuries sustained in the attack, but have since been discharged.

South Wales Police have now charged 27-year-old Alexander Stephen Dighton from the Llantrisant area with seven different offences, including attempted murder.

Of the other offences put to him, Dighton was also charged with assaulting an emergency worker, assault, arson, criminal damage, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of a knife or a bladed article.

He was remanded into custody following the investigation, and will appear before Merthyr Magistrates' Court on Monday morning (February 3rd) at 10am.

Speaking on the incident, Chief Superintendent of South Wales Police, Stephen Jones said: "I wish to thank the local community and the wider public for their support and concern for the officers involved.

"Our officers showed great bravery and quick thinking during the altercation and despite being understandably shaken I am very glad to report that none of the officers involved sustained any major injuries."
