Stoke-on-Trent ceramics have taken pride of place among the official gifts presented by the Prime Minister to the President and First Lady of the United States during this week’s state visit.
Handmade English bone China mugs and baubles, designed by Longton-based Susan Rose China and depicting Chequers House, were included in the official hamper. Their inclusion showcases Stoke-on-Trent’s world-renowned reputation as the capital of ceramics, placing the city’s craftsmanship firmly on the international stage.
Alongside the Stoke-on-Trent contribution, President Trump was presented with a bespoke red ministerial box, custom-made and embossed with the Presidential seal. The First Lady received a silk scarf designed by children from St Mary’s Ukrainian School with Ukrainian artist Mariya Dykalo of Aspinal of London, alongside a selection of locally sourced treats from Chequers.
Stoke-on-Trent North MP, David Williams said: “It is a moment of real pride to see Stoke-on-Trent represented on the world stage. Susan Rose China reflects the skill and creativity that has made our city famous across the globe, and to have their work chosen as a diplomatic gift shows the continuing strength of our traditions.
“A piece of Stoke-on-Trent now sits in the White House. That is a powerful symbol of what our city contributes to Britain’s reputation, and why protecting our ceramics industry is so vital for the future.”
