Mystery surrounds a sonic-boom type noise heard over the south-west - mainly Dorset

People took to social media to post recordings of the loud bang heard shortly before 3.00pm on Saturday.

Mike McDaid from Owermoigne near Dorchester captured the boom on a security camera.

He said: "I was out in the garden and the noise was tremendous."

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson told The Mirror newspaper that the bang was not believed to be linked to any RAF planes.

There has been speculation it could have been a meteor entering the earth's atmosphere.

The British Geological Survey ruled out an earthquake.
