A man has been charged over the murder of Akeem Francis-Kerr in Walsall town centre last weekend.

Edward Wilson was detained in South Yorkshire in connection with the fatal stabbing at Valesha's nightclub last Saturday morning (March 11).

The 39-year-old from Oldbury has now been charged with murder and remanded to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court today (March 18).

Detectives said Akeem's family have been updated with the latest developments and they continue to support them.

In a statement, West Midlands Police said: "Our enquiries remain ongoing and you can send any information or mobile footage directly to us via our website.

"We know there have also been concerns around recent knife crime in the town and we've been working hard, alongside partner agencies across Walsall, to reduce the risk of violence."

Valesha's nightclub has had its licence suspended following a meeting by Walsall Council's licensing sub-committee.

A report to the committee said Chief Superintendent Phil Dolby, of West Midlands Police, requested a premises licence summary review on the grounds that the premises was "associated with both serious crime and serious disorder".

The report also alleges the venue has historic association with people believed to be gang members and that some "gang nominals" were present at the premises on the night of the incident.

There was also an allegation of failure to comply with a condition of licence – that "routine searches will take place to ensure that no illegal substances or weapons are brought in to the club”.

The club hasn't commented publicly. A full licence hearing will now happen next month.
