Pet owners warned against buying French Bulldogs to prevent health issues
The breed is at a higher risk of health problems than other dogs
As the Christmas season gets closer, experts are warning against buying French bulldogs after new research showed the breed is more likely to suffer from health issues.
It was found that the breed, known for its large head and flat face, is more at risk of health problems connected to its most well-known features.
The study compared nearly 3,000 French Bulldogs to over 21,000 dogs of other breeds. Once research finished, it was discovered that of the 43 most common disorders, French Bulldogs were at a higher risk of 20 of the problems, in part due to the dog's extremely small body size.
Some of the health issues French Bulldogs suffered more from included narrow nostrils - restricting the dog's airways, skin fold dermatitis and difficulties when giving birth to puppies.
Experts say that social media is responsible for the skyrocket in demand for French Bulldogs, with influencers and celebrities playing a part in their new-found popularity.
However, people looking to adopt or buy a pet are being asked to "stop and think" about taking on French Bulldogs, as their needs require constant attention, which could lead to neglect.
Speaking about the study, lead author Dr. Dan O'Neill from the Royal Veterinary College said: "There is no doubting that many humans love the feeling of owning their special French Bulldog. But sadly, this study helps us to grasp the full extent of the serious health issues affecting these dogs.
"Especially in the lead-up to Christmas, we should give dogs a special present by putting the needs of the dog before the desires of the human. Stop and think before buying a flat-face dog."
