Woman dies as bus crashes into bank in Darlington

​Police are now in a position to confirm an elderly female pedestrian has died in this morning's bus collision in Northgate, Darlington.

Two pedestrians, who were injured, have been taken to hospital by ambulance. At this time their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The driver of the bus, a 52 year old man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Chief Inspector Graham Milne, said: "Obviously this is a tragic incident and I would like to extend my condolences to the deceased's family. I would also ask anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the collision to contact us on 101."

The road closure is still in place from St. Cuthbert's Way roundabout to Crown Street and a pedestrian cordon from M & S to the pedestrian zone at the top of Crown Street. Diversions are in place for some time.

Emergency services are still at the scene and would like to extend their thanks to the local businesses in the Northgate area for their cooperation during the incident.
