Two people were arrested this morning as part of a police operation to improve life in a Stockton street.

Cleveland Police raided two properties on Hartington Road as part of Operation Plum, a multi-agency project to tackle antisocial behaviour and crime.

The two men, who were both known by police, were both in wheelchairs when they were arrested.

The first was arrested on suspicion of supplying Class A drugs and the second was arrested on suspicion of theft.

Police officers were joined by officers from Cleveland Fire and Rescue who carried out checks on rented properties in the street.

Stockton Council's Trading Standards team also visited a shop at the end of the road and it's believed conterfeit tobacco was retreived from the scene.

Neighbouring Inspector Tony Cross said: "Hartington Road has always been a problem for my staff.

"It's primarily single-occupany flats and there is high unemployment here and we just want to make sure that one, we're tackling drug dealing but two, that we're improving quality of life for tenants too.

"With that in mind we're carrying out audits of every property.

"I think it sends out the right message to the residents and the community and people who live here that we will listen to their concerns.

"We will develop community intelligence and will make sure we deliver a quality service and inspire public confidence"
