Varicose veins and back pain might not be things you associate with your average 30-year-old- but stress is reportedly behind a sharp rise in our region’s ailments.

It's as new figures show its mainly 25-40 year olds that are suffering from stress related physical pains-when over 60,000 patients were studied.

Knee replacements are one of the North-East’s biggest complaints- along with haemorrhoid problems- things we've always associated with older generations.

Stress is being blamed- and Neil Gregory- from Mental Health Matters- says it’s time for the Government to act.

“Redundancies and service closures-these people are left in work- having much more to do and that’s obviously going to impact on their mental health.

“Quite often what we find with things like stress- it manifests itself physically before it does psychologically- aches and pains, bad backs, it quite often turns out to be stress related.”

He says seeking help is always the best option.

“Talk to somebody. Stress will only get worse when it’s bottled up- it’s something that needs to be addressed.”
