Police are appealing for information after a fire started after cable was stolen from an electric box at a property on Scarth Walk in Stockton. The incident happened at around 1am on Wednesday 31st August.

Around 1.5 metres of cable had been cut from the electric box, leaving the wires exposed. The wires had then ignited and caused considerable damage to the front of the property, including the porch, windows and a bin shed attached to the property.

The sole occupant in the house was fortunately woken by two members of the public who had been passing by. Investigating officer, PC Dave Leen, said:

“The victim in this incident has been extremely lucky that two members of the public were walking by and managed to wake him up. This incident could have ended very differently and it’s fortunate that nobody has ended up seriously injured or worse.

“I would encourage anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area around the time of this incident to contact police.”
