It happened in Hemlington at around 2.40am when officers reponded to a reporter of a fire in the Cass House Road/Earls Court Road areas.

Officers and colleagues from the neighbourhood safety team continue to have a presence in the area to reassure members of the local community.
Chief Inspector Nigel Burnell from Middlesbrough Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We will continue to have a high visibility presence in Hemlington over the coming days as we reassure our communities that this type of behaviour is not acceptable and won’t be tolerated.
“Not only have some residents been left fearful as a result of what happened, but we also have an officer who suffered a serious hand injury requiring surgery and facial injuries.
