North Yorkshire's shops, bars and restaurants are going to be doing their bit to help keep women and girls safe.

Staff are going to be offered bystander training - to step in, if anyone is feeling uncomfortable.

'Safer Streets' training is being offered by IDAS, a charity in the North supporting people affected by domestic abuse and sexual violence.

The fully funded training's been organised and delivered in partnership with North Yorkshire Horizons - an adult alcohol and drug recovery service.

IDAS states often, women and girls feel unsafe on the streets and in communities, which can impact participation and limit opportunities.

Safeguarding all children and vulnerable adults is everyone's business and it is important to work together to make sure that everyone can safely enjoy the diverse range of leisure, cultural and entertainment activities in their area.

Research shows that over 80% of young women have been sexually harassed or physically threatened in public places and that more than half of all women will be subject to domestic abuse or sexual violence in their lifetimes.

Given these shocking statistics and following the horrendous murder of Sarah Everard, the government pledged to fund initiatives aimed at making our streets safer for women, girls and all vulnerable people.

  • Getting help and support.

The training opportunity is open to retail, licenced premises, restaurants and all businesses across Harrogate & District.
