Police warn of dangers of cannabis farms after a fire in Middlesbrough

Police are warning of the dangers that cannabis farms pose to local communties.
It's after officers were called by the Cleveland Fire Brigade regarding a fire at a property on Clive Road, Middlesbrough, around midday on Friday 11th August.
The fire service attended and discovered a small cannabis farm at the address.
Fortunately, no one was injured but the fire caused significant damage to the property and minor damage to another property, which is believed to have been caused by dangerous electrics in the cannabis farm.
49 plants believed to be worth around ÂŁ40,000 were located across a number of rooms in the property.
Neighbourhood Sergeant John Sproson from Middlesbrough Neighbourhood Team said:
“This incident highlights the dangers that cannabis farms can pose amongst our communities.
“It is fortunate that the fire did not spread even further and that no one was hurt, however, significant damage has been caused.
“Landlords are asked to be vigilant when renting to tenants that they do not know, especially if they are offering cash payments.
“Dangerous wiring which is used to bypass electricity meters proves to be a fire hazard at most cannabis farms which are discovered, which can put lives at risk and cause damage to other properties. The irresponsible actions of those setting up these farms could lead to a significant incident.
