Repairs to the westbound carriageway of the A66 have been completed ahead of schedule

The work followed a major operation to remove a 40-tonne industrial vessel which damaged the road after falling from the back of a lorry.

The incident – on a bridge near the Shepherdson Way junction at North Ormesby – a saw a section of carriageway closed for a week.

The huge gas heat exchanger was subsequently removed by crane, with a temporary repair in place to get the road open again.

A full repair to the bridge deck, waterproof membrane and both layers of Tarmac on the viaduct has now been carried out ahead of Saturday’s expected completion date.

Lane 1 opened with remaining traffic management removed by 10pm yesterday (Wed) and the road re-opened as normal.

A Middlesbrough Council spokesman said: “We’re pleased to be able to re-open the carriageway earlier than expected now the repair work is complete.

“Once again we’d like to thank motorists for their patience and understanding in what have been highly unusual circumstances.”
