Women in the North East could be making themselves isolated and unhappy by being overly self-critical.

Research by Weightwatchers found that women in our region admit to criticising themselves up to eight times a day.

Failure at work and pressures of social media are thought to be the major areas of concern for North East women.

Half of the women polled said they criticised themselves in a way they would never criticise family or friends.

Many women revealed they can feel uncomfortable or embarrassed about receiving a compliment or praising themselves.

Emma Oliver runs The Friendly Development Charity, they offer support to youngsters and adults with low self-esteem across the North East.

She said: "It's become something that we just so naturally do, it's become a habit.

"Rather than paying ourselves a compliment and finding positive things, it's like we're doing the exact opposite.

"That's really damaging for our happiness, our confidence and our quality of life."
