'More North East Jobs A Priority' Says PM

The Prime Minister says bringing more jobs to the North East is a priority to his new government.

It's as the latest unemployment figures show that there's been another fall in the North East.

In the three months between January and March, the number of people out of work fell by 7,000 to 96,000 people.

That figure represents 7.5% of the workforce, down from 8% last time.

Despite the fall, the rate of unemployment in the North East remains the highest in the UK. The national rate stands at 5.5%

Speaking in Stockton yesterday, David Cameron said things are getting better in the region but there's still a lot of work to be done.

The North East has one of the highest rates of unemployment in the country, however the last set of figures found there's now just 8 percent out of a job here.

“I wanted to come here as a demonstration and I do believe in making sure that the whole country benefits from economic growth.”

“Here in the North East exports have been growing faster than any other part of the country but yes we do need more jobs, we do need more businesses, more growth and help more people out of poverty, out of welfare and into work.”

“There’s a lot of hope for people who’ve got that job and got that pay cheque and the chance to live a better life. Now we just want that for more people. That’s what this government should be all about, is delivering for working people.”
