North East foodbanks need our unopened leftover
Foodbanks across our region are asking for unopened food to help vunerable familes, including excess chocolates
Food banks in the North East are urging familes across our region to continue donating to help vulnerable people after Christmas. Durham Foodbank say they see a rise in the number of donations in the run up Christmas, but it falls away as everyone starts to watch their budget and their waste-line.
They are calling for people to keep donating, with all the untouched and unwanted food left over from the holidays – including the Christmas chocolates so we don’t get tempted and can start that New Year’s diet.
Peter MacLennan is the Chief Executive of Durham Foodbank he says as well as needing the essentials, those struggling also deserve a treat.
‘Clearly people need the essentials if they’re short of food, they need food to keep the body and soul together, but equally especially for families to have a few treats some chocolates to offer alongside it, makes life that bit better.’
Some foodbanks will remain open between Christmas and the New Year for anyone who is struggling across the region.
Durham Foodbank have also urged the public to donate next year as they report that in the run up to the spring and summer seasons, the amount of food available to those in need runs very low as donations fall away.
