MP calls for review after A19 crash
Grahame Morris says yesterday's 12-car crash is just the latest in a long list of incidents and it's time for action
Easington MP Grahame Morris says it's time for the government to investigate why there are so many incidents on the A19.
The road was closed in both directions for most of yesterday following a 12-car crash that saw the Great North Air Ambulance called and three people taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital.
It is thought that all three suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The road is infamous in the region for being affected by accidents, lane closures and heavy traffic almost daily - and Grahame Morris MP says now it's time for the government to commission the Highways Agency to investigate the cause, and the government to fund any improvements that need making.
The Easington MP said:
"Well these incidents are a regular occurrence - and the frequency seems to be increasing.
"I want to put on record my thanks to the emergency services for their prompt and professional response - but nevertheless, there are families today that are worried about their loved ones and whether or not they can travel safely on the A19.
"This reinforces the need for a safety review to find out if there are any common factors contributing to the frequency of accidents."
A Department for Transport spokesperson said:
“This is a serious incident and our thoughts are with all those affected. Britain continues to have some of the safest roads in the world but we are determined to do more.
“We are currently working on upgrades to the A19 at the Testos and Downhill Lane junctions, and since 2011 Highways England has delivered safety improvements at ten sites on the road.
