People with motor neurone disease in parts of Teesside should get more support.

Redcar and Cleveland Council have signed up to the MND charter to improve their quality of life.

Former Redcar Mayor Mike Findley MBE was diagnosed with the disease in 2005, he said: “You lose your independence. The daily things I can’t do for myself I have to rely on my wife. She helps me get showered and dressed in the morning.”

He wants more council in the North East to sign up to the charter.

It sets out five points:

  1. People with MND have the right to an early diagnosis and information.
  1. People with MND have the right to access quality care and treatments.
  1. People with MND have the right to be treated as an individual and with dignity and respect.
