A Middlesbrough school has been closed today, after a burglary at the site caused damage to the building.

Outwood Academy Normanby had posted on Twitter and Facebook to warn pupils, parents and staff not to come to the school site today.

A spokesperson for Outwood Academy Normanby said:

"We can confirm that there was damage caused to the academy building due to a burglary overnight, which unfortunately led to today's closure.

"We are currently working with the Police regarding the incident and staff are working tirelessly to ensure we can welcome back our students as soon as possible.

"Lastly, we would like to thank our students and parents for their patience and understanding on this matter."

And a statement from Cleveland Police reads:

“We were called to reports of a burglary at around 12.30am this morning, in which damage was caused to glass at the rear of the building.

"Officers are investigating; however it is not yet known what has been stolen from the school.

"Anyone who may have seen someone acting suspiciously in and around the school during the early hours of this morning is asked to contact Cleveland Police on the non-emergency number 101.”
