The Middlesbrough Mela has been postponed after violent rioting in the town.

The annual event - due to be held on August 17 and 18 - is dubbed as one of the region's biggest multi-cultural events.

It was predicted more than 50,000 people were expected to attend this year's celebration.

But organisers said they felt it necessary to postpone the event to ensure the safety of the public following the disorder seen in Middlesbrough and other towns and cities across the country.

The statement in full:

'Dear Mela Community,

'The Middlesbrough Mela is a cherished festival that, for the past 33 years, has brought together people from various cultures, races, and religions to celebrate unity, positive integration, and togetherness. It is a time for friends and families to come together, enjoy vibrant performances, delicious food, and a range of activities in a joyful and safe environment.

'We always prioritise the safety and well-being of our attendees at the Mela and we strive to create a secure space where everybody can relax and enjoy themselves without any concerns or feelings of anxiety. Unfortunately, this stability has been shaken lately due to the deplorable violence, criminality and unrest we have witnessed unfold in many of our towns and cities.

'Due to this volatile climate and degree of uncertainty, we believe it is prudent to postpone this year’s festival in order to safeguard the public. This decision has been a very difficult one but it allows us time to make more vigorous risk assessments and ensure that we can deliver this event safely for all our communities.

'We will be working closely with our partners and stakeholders to determine the most appropriate course of action of when to reschedule the festival. We are committed to providing updates and will announce the new date as soon as we have completed our assessments.

'Thank you for your continued support and understanding during these testing times.

'Please stay safe and remain vigilant.

'Warm regards,

'The Middlesbrough Mela Team'
