A man from Middlesbrough has been found guilty of raping two women in one night.

Haider Ali, of Ayresome Street in Middlesbrough, began attacked the women in Stockton late on Saturday, 7 September 2024.

The 31-year-old raped the first woman twice at the side of a derelict building near Yarm Road.

A jury heard how he complimented her, telling the woman she was ‘lovely’, that he wanted to ‘cuddle’ and ‘kiss’ her before pushing her to the floor and carrying out the attack which took place for around one hour.

In footage shown to the court, Ali was seen running away from her when people nearby could be heard arguing.

Shortly afterwards, Ali approached another woman who was walking along Spring Street.

After they spoke, he began to grab and kiss her. He then raped her despite the victim repeatedly saying no and telling him during the attack that she would call the police.

When Ali stopped, the woman told him that she would dial 999 and he begged her not to. He then ran off towards Westbourne Street and a woman known to the victim gave chase, but he managed to flee.

An investigation began as soon as the report was made to police with detectives quickly obtaining and gathering CCTV footage in a bid to identify the attacker.

This led to a photo of Ali being released to the public, which led to him being located at a property in Middlesbrough on Tuesday, 10th September.

Ali had shaved his beard, and upon his arrest he said it was a ‘false allegation’ and ‘consensual’. Following questioning, Ali was charged with three counts of rape and remanded in custody.

The victims spoke to specialist officers to recall what happened and have been provided with support.

Ali was found guilty of three counts of rape following a trial that began at Teesside Crown Court on Tuesday, 21st January 2025. He is due to be sentenced on Monday, 17th March.

Detective Inspector Matt Hollingsworth, of Cleveland Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “Firstly I would like to commend both women for their bravery in coming forward. They not only reported what happened, which led to Ali being wanted by police, but they provided detailed accounts that would have been distressing and traumatic to speak about.

“Their courage and determination never wavered despite Ali denying what happened and knowing there would be a court case.

“It will have been difficult for the victims to re-live their ordeal however they should be proud of their courage which has helped protect other vulnerable women from being targeted.”

“Ali is a sexual predator who was captured on CCTV prowling the streets of Stockton. The only emotion he has shown is towards himself with no regards for the two women he attacked.
