Former Coronation Street actress Michelle Keegan has backed a campaign in Middlesbrough to encourage people to go for cervical cancer screening.

Middlesbrough Council, Redcar and Cleveland Council and NHS England want women to get it done, and so does a mum from the town who has survived it.

Leanne Sewell was diagnosed with cervical cancer at just 25: “There’s lots more invasive surgeries that can come with cervical cancer, sometimes even a hysterectomy. It’s really important for people to get screened.

She’s pleased Michelle Keegan’s got involved: “She’s kind of relatable because she’s young, so I think it’s fantastic.”

Cervical screening already saves up to 4,500 lives a year yet many women who are eligible for screening do not take up their invitation.
