Man charged in connection with Bishop Auckland firearms incident

A man, who was reportedly shot by armed police through the window of a taxi, will appear at court charged with possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

The 24-year-old, of no fixed abode, was charged in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, May 30).

He has been remanded in custody to appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court later today.

The man was shot by armed police on Friday in Bishop Auckland and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

He was later released from hospital and arrested before being taken to police custody in Darlington.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have been informed of the incident and have begun an independent investigation
