A tough new public spaces protection order (PSPO) is coming into force on Thursday 1 July, to crack down on antisocial behaviour and the vehicle nuisance problem at Majuba Car Park and the surrounding Coatham development area in Redcar.

The PSPO has been put in place by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and will be enforced with immediate effect by both RCBC and Cleveland Police officers.

Those engaging in dangerous, nuisance or threatening behaviour, particularly relating to ‘car cruising’, can expect to be held to account - with a fixed penalty of £100 and a maximum fine of £1000 possible.

Insp Neil Deluce and Cllr Julie Craig

The order has become necessary after many incidents, including speeding and dangerous driving, intimidation, littering and urinating in public, were reported.

“There are times of day when Majuba Car Park does not feel a safe place to be,” commented Julie Craig, Cabinet Member for Highways, Neighbourhoods and Transport. “This cannot – and will not - be allowed to continue. Not only do we want all residents and visitors to feel safe and enjoy the area, we also want those participating in such activities to realise that they can be a danger to themselves at times, whether they are behind the wheel, a passenger or one of those who are gathering where these activities take place.”

Inspector Neil Deluce of the Neighbourhood Policing team added: “We have seen an increase in calls regarding antisocial behaviour in this location. This order will act as a deterrent alongside other police powers. Officers will continue to patrol the area and will take action against those who use the car park inappropriately.”
