Over 300 North East people have expressed their interest in fostering an unaccompanied youngster from Syria.

They've signed up to an event taking place in Stockton tonight, where they can find out more about taking in a young refugee.

It's being run by charity Home for Good, who encourage people across the UK to foster children in need.

The charity were saddened by the migrant crisis, and decided to ask people in the UK if they wanted to help.

The organisation was inundated with responses, and are now going around the UK telling people how they can help.

The event is taking place at the Baptist Tabernacle, The Square, in Stockton between 7pm and 9pm.

Regional Development Manager for the North East, Amy Burns says the people of Teesside have always been hospitable.

She said: "I think this is a great place.

"I'm constantly amazed by the welcoming nature of people up here and the massive heart people have to help and open up their homes."

Generous people around the region are also doing their part to prepare for the 500 migrants the region is expected to take in over the next five years.

Judith Russell is part of Darlington Assistance for Refugees, who aim to help migrants once they arrive in the area, by getting them settled in their new home.

She's visited the migrant camps in Calais and says it makes her even more passionate about welcoming refugees to Darlington.

She said: "Not only have they been separated from their family, we have to remember the journey they had before they even got to Calais.

"It was Katie Hopkins' hate that inspired me.

"You think everybody welcomes people that are in dire needs and it's quite suprising when you realise not everyone feels that way."
