Hats and Blankets for Newborn Babies!

Published 17th Sep 2015

North East mams who deliver a baby early or unexpectedly could receive a knitted hat and blanket from their paramedics.

That's thanks to a group called Blue Light Babies, who make knitted goods for babies who are born pre-hospital.

It was set up on Facebook by Thornaby ambulance worker Jo Owens, who wanted to keep herself active while she was off work with an injury.

Working in ambulances, Jo realised that there were no baby items on board for a baby if they were delivered in a public place or in the vehicle itself.

She created the Facebook group with the aim of reaching 100 members, but only 3 weeks since forming, she has over 1000 people in the group.

Knitters across the region have been donating hats, blankets, wool and plastic bags to Jo, so she can get more community groups involved in the scheme.

Jo said:

"We all know babies arrive as and when they want, and not always when they're expected.

Babies have been born in public toilets, football fields, other people's homes, parties, where mum's not really prepared for baby to arrive at that time.

That's why we need baby blankets and hats, to keep the babies warm."

Babies aren't born with the ability to maintain their own temperatures, so it's up to us as professionals to be able to do that for them."
