The GMB union is claiming the UK faces a Christmas crisp shortage if its planned strike action in County Durham goes ahead.

Almost 50 KP Snacks workers in Billingham have voted to walk out.

They claim they've been handed additional responsibilities by the company - which makes products including Hula-Hoops, McCoy's, Pom-Bears and Discos - without extra pay.

A GMB Union spokesperson said:

"A majority of 85 per cent of process operatives at KP Snacks in Billingham vote for industrial action after the company imposed additional duties and responsibilities without any increase in pay.

"Bosses have now halted all holiday requests while it evaluates the potential impact of industrial action, in what looks like a punitive measure.

"GMB Union is seeking legal advice on whether this decision is unlawful. Members will now meet to discuss strike dates."

Paul Clark, GMB Organiser, said:

“GMB members at KP are skilled workers essential to the production of crisps and snacks.

“Their expertise keeps operations running smoothly and supermarket shelves stocked, yet they are being asked to do additional work for the same pay.

“If they've been asked to do extra work, they should get more pay..

“They will not stand by while their workload increases without recognition.

“It’s crunch time for KP bosses, so unless they want to see the shelves empty this Christmas, it’s time to get back round the table and sort this out.”

In response a KP Snacks spokesperson said:

“We are disappointed by the outcome of this ballot, which involves a small number of our colleagues at Teesside, and we remain in ongoing discussions with them and the GMB.

“We value the Teesside team and the important role they play in producing our products and remain committed to constructive dialogue to find a resolution.

“In the meantime, robust contingency plans are in place to minimise disruption and ensure continuity of supply.''
