Cleveland Police say they will be continuing to carry out random checks on drivers this festive period, ahead of New Year’s Eve.

The Government has given the go-ahead for New Year celebrations - saying new Covid-19 restrictions will not be brought in before the end of 2021.

But police bosses are urging people to stay safe and sensible - and that drink drivers will be caught.

Chief Inspector Helen Wilson says they will be out, checking drivers for the influence of drink or drugs;

“The last thing we want, especially at Christmas time, is someone who gets behind the wheel whilst under the influence who ends up killing themselves or other innocent people.

“There really is no safe way to combine alcohol, drugs and driving. I would urge anyone not to get behind the wheel if intoxicated, to ensure they protect themselves and those around them.”
