Improvements to cycle routes in Middlesbrough set to get underway
Work is set to go ahead on the Linthorpe Road Cycle lane
Middlesbrough council are working to increase access for cyclists in the town - with improvements on Linthorpe Bike Lane getting underway next month.
Work on the Linthorpe Road cycling lane began in the summer to create a quick and safe route into the heart of Middlesbrough.
Half of the rubber dividers that separate the bike lane from the main carriageway will now be replaced with upright poles to reduce the potential trip hazard to pedestrians crossing the road and make the lane more visible.
The work will be carried out overnight during the week beginning Monday, November 14, with Linthorpe Road closed between Borough Road and Ayresome Street from 7pm to 6am each evening.
Diversion routes will be in place, with the works due to be complete by Saturday, November 19. A temporary bus stop will be introduced on Park Road North, next to the One Life Centre car park, to replace the existing northbound stop on Linthorpe Road.
In due course the new route will continue to Acklam and link into sections of the Tees Valley cycling and walking network, with further links to Thornaby and Stockton.
The improvements have been funded from the Department for Transport and from TVCA’s Transforming Cities Fund.
A spokesman for Middlesbrough Council said: “The Linthorpe Road cycle lane is similar to schemes in other towns and cities, and is part of an approach that will deliver an efficient and sustainable transport system that benefits all road users.
“The feedback from cyclists has been overwhelmingly positive, but such changes take time to bed in, and we always welcome the views of road users and pedestrians.
“In response to the feedback received, the decision has been taken to replace half of the rubber markers with upright poles to improve visibility.
“The work will be carried out overnight to minimise disruption, and we’re grateful to members of the public and local businesses for their patience and understanding.”
