Cleveland Police has appealed for the owner of an XL bully to come forward after the dog was found alone.

Officers received a call from a concerned member of the public, after they raised suspicions of an XL bully walking around Brandon Close in Billingham.

Responders travelled to the scene at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday (June 30) and found the dog alone in a shed on the street.

Police took the dog and transferred it to a safe and secure building, where it currently remains.

An appeal has now been launched for the owner of the dog to come forward, as enquiries continue by the force themselves.

XL bullies have been a banned breed in the UK following a string of incidents that resulted in the mauling of several people.

The new regulations came into force in February and require those who wished to keep their dog to get a Certificate of Exemption, as well as being microchipped and muzzled in public places.

Anyone who knows the owners of the dog that was discovered by officers can get in touch with the force by calling 101 and quoting incident reference number 123113.
