People who are looking to go out for a walk or hike across Teesside are being urged to plan and prepare.

Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team say being 'adventure smart' means there is less risk of someone getting in trouble.

Gary Clarke is the call-out officer there and said: "If you consider going on a long walk to burn off what you've eaten, if you're not used to that then don't do it. If you're not familiar with the area then don't do it unless you prepare with a map and compass. Go within your own capabilities, your skills and your knowledge.

"If you're only used to walking a mile or two, don't start doing an eight and 10 mile hike on the Moors. Build up carefully and by all means go out for even short, half hour walks around your local area is fine, but don't go exploring somewhere you're not familiar with without the right equipment, knowledge, a map and compass.

"People do get into bother trying to rely on what they think is local knowledge or their mobile phones for navigation, which are great when they work but they don't always work. Batteries die, especially in cold weather. Be prepared if you're going further afield then what you're used to.

"We tend to average around 60 incidents per year, for whatever reason this year has just been one of those years where we've had some very, very quiet weeks and then we seem to have two to three call-outs in quick succession, but on the whole it's been fairly quiet."
