Case reviews launched after Angela Wrightson murder trial

Hartlepool Council confirm reviews will be conducted regarding the care of both girls and Angela Wrightson herself.

Multi-agency reviews are underway following the murder trial of Hartlepool woman Angela Wrightson.

Two girls aged 14 and 15 were found guilty of beating the 39-year-old to death in 2014.

The alcoholic was found half naked with over 100 separate injuries.

Angela Wrightson's case undergo an independent Safeguarding Adult Review by Teeswide Safeguarding Adults Board.

Independent Serious Case Reviews are bring undertaken by the Hartlepool Safeguarding Children Board regarding the two teenagers.

The cases will be reviewed independently of the local area and will include experts in mental health and child criminology.

Ann Baxter, independent Chair of the Teeswide Safeguarding Adults Board, said: “This is a tragedy for everyone involved and the Safeguarding Adult Review will consider all the circumstances leading up to Angela Wrightson’s murder.

“Deborah Jeremiah is a leading expert in her field and I am sure that she will leave no stone unturned in identifying whether any lessons can be learnt by any of the agencies involved.”

Dave Pickard, independent Chair of the Hartlepool Safeguarding Children Board, said: “The purpose of the Serious Case Reviews is to determine whether the actions taken by the teenagers, leading to Angela’s tragic murder, could have been prevented by the agencies who were involved with the teenagers.

“The Hartlepool Safeguarding Children Board will also ensure that, if it becomes evident from the reviews that lessons need to be learnt, those agencies act upon them.

“Events like this are extremely rare and we owe it to Angela to learn everything we can and, where necessary, share those lessons nationally.

“Jane Wiffin is a leading national voice in children’s safeguarding, who has undertaken a number of previous reviews, and we look forward to receiving her findings.”
